Lesson Excerpt:

Delaware, a tiny state on the east coast of the United States, was one of the original thirteen colonies. Although Delaware adjoins the Atlantic Ocean, it has a mere twenty-eight miles of ocean shoreline. It shares a short circular border with Pennsylvania to the north. In 1681, the King of England granted William Penn, the founder of the Pennsylvania colony, a circular piece of land. This created the unusual border shape for Delaware. Maryland surrounds Delaware to the west and south while the Delaware River, the Delaware Bay and the Atlantic Ocean lie to the east.
