Lesson Excerpt:

What do you think is happening in the picture?  Well, it’s a picture of a plant busy making its food.  Plants can’t just get up and go to the supermarket when they are hungry so they have to make their food themselves with the ingredients they have all around them.  We call green plants autotrophs, which means producers, because they produce their own food.

The process which green plants use to make their food is called  photosynthesis. Photosynthesis is made up of two words:  photo, which means light, and synthesis, which means putting things together to make something else.
