Ordinal Numbers

Lesson Summary:

The lesson assumes that the children are able to count to ten and know their colors.  It introduces the first ten ordinal numbers.  Depending on their reading ability, the teacher could read or discuss the lesson and the children should follow the reading or discussion on their own individual sheets.     Activity A requires the children to match the ordinal numbers with the cardinal numbers.  They might need help identifying the ordinal numbers before matching them up.  Activity B is a coloring activity.  The children should identify the positions and color each bird accordingly.

Objectives:

  • The children will understand and be able to explain when ordinal numbers are used.
  • The children will be able to match ordinal number to cardinal numbers.

These numbers are called cardinal numbers.

We have another set of numbers which are called ordinal numbers.  Cardinal numbers tell us how many objects there are.  Ordinal numbers tell us the position of the objects when they are placed in order.

For example, if you and your friends are running a race and you are fastest, you will be first.  The one who comes in behind you will be second and the next one third.
