Math Order of Operations

Lesson Summary:

The lesson introduces the children to the three rules of the order of operations in math.  The discussion can be used either as an individual or as a paired reading activity, but the teacher may like to work through more examples with the children before they attempt the activities.    Activity A requires the children to solve math problems using the basic rules of order and Activity B includes the use of parentheses.

Objectives:

  • The children will understand and be able to solve math problems using the correct order of operations.
  • The children will understand rules of order of operations.

Subject Area:

Math

Lesson Excerpt:

Peter and Paula were working on a math problem:  4 + 3 x 5 = ?

Peter worked his out like this:     4 + 3 = 7 x 5 = 35

Paula worked hers out like this:  3 x 5 = 15 + 4 = 19

Neither of them made a mistake in their calculations, so why were their answers so different?

The difference was in the order in which they performed their math operations. Since we can have only one correct answer in math we need a set of rules to follow when we have to perform more then one math operation in a calculation.
