Volume – Visual Estimations

Lesson Summary:

Teaching volume at kindergarten level usually involves the use of non-standard units and therefore the emphasis is on the capacity of any container to hold a variety of objects.  The reading consists of a short narrative about two little boys, one of whom makes the common mistake at this age of assuming that the tall container must hold more.  Activity A is a Free Play activity, encouraging the children to experiment on their own with a variety of containers in a sand box.  Activity B requires them to estimate the capacity of various containers and check their estimation by using a standardized measuring cup.

Objectives:

  • The children will investigate the capacity of various differently sized and shaped containers.
  • The children will be able make a visual estimation of the capacity of the containers.
  • The children will be able to record their estimations and measurements on a bar graph.
  • The children will be able to order containers according to their capacity.

Lesson Excerpt:

Mom explained that, although Billy’s mug was taller than Bobby’s it was also narrow.  Bobby’s mug was short but wide. So they both had the same amount of chocolate milk.  Bobby wasn’t at all sure about that, he could see that Billy’s mug was bigger!  So mom told them that when they were finished with their chocolate milk they could wash their mugs and see how much soapy water they could fit into each one.

Who do you think was correct – Bobby or his mom?
